Emerging Artists at The Other Art Fair

Posted on

Thursday evening my husband and I went to a private preview at The Other Art Fair organised by Saatchi Art.

I always look forward to a visit to The Other Art Fair. It is one of the only fairs where you can meet emerging artists and buy their work direct for a reasonable price. All artists are selected to exhibit by an expert panel.

This edition took place under an airy canopy with the outstanding architectural setting of Coal Drops Yard, King's Cross as a back drop. There was a dj playing and the atmosphere was buzzy and viby, yet unpretentious.

There was a wide variety of art on display to suit all tastes and budgets. But, three artists caught my eye:

Brian Reinker is a mixed media and collage artist. He has been selected by Saatchi Art as one of the 21 artists to collect in 2021. With a background in architecture, he applies a mathematical, disciplined approach to his work.  He works with lines and textures using paper, vinyl and foil to create multi-layered works that are mounted on Dibond panels.

I particularly like his series inspired by Missoni prints. Some of the works are framed without glass bringing the patterns, colours and textures to life.   A pair of these on a wall in parallel colours but complimentary patterns would make a striking feature.

I must have been drawn to boldness, colour and playfulness on Thursday evening as I much enjoyed Nathalie Kingdon's work. Nathalie is a French screen printer and artist inspired by her childhood in the South of France. Images are taken from old magazines and digitally manipulated.  Layer after layer is screen printed onto paper to create the final piece.

Ou sont les femmes (pictured below) is inspired by the 1970s and a line from the film, L'homme Qui Amait Les Femmes: 'The legs of women are compasses which survey the territorial globe in all direction, giving it its balance, its harmony.'

Matt Jukes is a printmaker.  He produces work using a 200 year old printing press.   Matt's landscapes are hazy, dream-like and mesmerising. His colour palettes are calming. He hopes that his pictures will stir up memories and reflections for the viewer.

My visit to The Other Art Fair was rounded off with a quick sharing dish of tasty pulled pork tacos at Casa Pastor in Coal Drops Yard. Try with a cool beer served with a Mexican twist - ice, lime juice and a salt rim - a refreshing drink on a balmy summer's night.
